Season 2 in Emojis: Waves, Fencing, and Feelings
When asked to describe The Sea of Monsters using just one emoji, the cast got wildly creative. Definitely teaser to all the wonders can pet in season 2.
“The wave emoji is it for me,” Aryan Simhadri said with a laugh. “There’s just so much water. Always drowning. It’s great.”
Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth Chase), went with the fencing emoji: “There’s so much fighting — emotionally and physically. That emoji really sums up what a lot of us are going through this season.”
Lessons from the Characters: Growth Beyond the Screen
As much as the story is about gods, monsters, and mythic quests, the cast revealed how personal and grounded their experiences have been playing these legendary characters.
Aryan Simhadri (Grover) shared how Grover’s empathy changed his perspective.
“Grover kind of looks at relationships like pieces on a chessboard. He sees how everyone connects, even if he’s not part of it. That’s something I’m trying to bring into my own life — to better read people, understand what they need, and be there for them without being in the center of it.”
Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth) admitted that she’s learned to slow down thanks to her character.
“Percy doesn’t think things through — he just goes. And I realized I do that too. I’ve always been like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it!’ without stopping to ask, ‘Wait, is this a good idea?’ Annabeth is all about being smart and strategic, and I’ve definitely picked that up from her this season.”
Dior Goodjohn (Clarisse) revealed how deeply Clarisse’s story of vulnerability and leadership mirrored her own growth.
RELATED:
“Clarisse is so strong, but she’s also learning that it’s okay to open up and ask for help. When she’s stoic, she’s actually trying to be vulnerable. And when she’s vulnerable, she’s trying to be quiet and controlled. That tension — I’ve really felt that in my own life. Learning to let people in and not trying to do everything by myself has been huge.”
Walker Scobell (Percy) reflected on how Percy’s mix of humor and heroism gave him a new perspective on coping with stress.
“Percy always gets the funny, sarcastic line in the middle of a crisis, and honestly, that helped me a lot. When you’re filming a super intense scene all day, it’s nice to break that tension for just a second. It reminded me that sometimes humor is your best weapon when things get overwhelming.”
Daniel Diemer (Tyson) opened up about how playing someone so emotionally open shifted his mindset.
“Tyson is just… pure. He meets people with total trust and love from the start. That vulnerability made me feel really exposed at first, but I came to see it as strength. It takes a lot more courage to be kind and open in a world that can be tough. That’s something I’m carrying with me, even off set.”
Behind the Scenes: Mythical Challenges Made Real
From dealing with limited depth perception while playing a one-eyed Cyclops, to perfecting emotionally intense moments with CGI all around them, the cast praised the creative team for building a space where the actors could fully commit to their characters.
Daniel Diemer shared,
“The prep was physical — figuring out how Tyson moves with one eye, how it affects his reactions, how he hears danger. But once that became second nature, I could focus on just being him. The emotional stuff is what really matters on set.”
