Netflix Turns Cinderella Inside Out With Amanda Seyfried and a Villain Redemption Story
There’s a familiar fairytale we all think we know but in 2026, that story is about to be turned completely inside out. A new Netflix original animated film, Steps, is stepping onto the scene with a bold, funny, and unexpectedly heartfelt twist on the classic Cinderella tale. And at the center of it all is Amanda Seyfried, slipping into the iconic glass slipper as Cinderella but not quite the version you grew up with. Because this isn’t just Cinderella’s story anymore.
Directed by visionary filmmaker Alyce Tzue, a Student Academy Awards gold medal winner, alongside John Ripa, the film already signals something visually and emotionally fresh. Behind the scenes, it’s powered by a powerhouse producing team, including Amy Poehler, bringing her signature wit and heart through Paper Kite Productions. But what really makes Steps feel like a breakout moment is its perspective shift.

When misunderstood Lilith, voiced by Ali Wong, is blamed for hijacking the Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand, everything spirals out of control she accidentally turns her sister Margot, voiced by Stephanie Hsu, into a frog and leaves the kingdom in the clutches of a prince-obsessed mean girl. Now, in a twist no one saw coming, Lilith must join forces with Cinderella, played by Amanda Seyfried and a surprisingly dreamy troll to save the kingdom, repair a fractured fairytale, and prove that even the so-called villains deserve a real shot at happily ever after.
Instead of centering the “perfect” princess, the story dives headfirst into the chaos, comedy, and misunderstood reality of the so-called “evil” stepsisters. Ali Wong voices Lilith, a character who has spent her life being labeled the villain but may actually be the most human of them all. When a magical mishap at the Royal Ball spirals out of control, Lilith is blamed for stealing a wand, accidentally transforms her sister Margot voiced by Stephanie Hsu into a frog, and leaves the kingdom teetering on the edge of disaster.
What follows is a wildly entertaining, genre bending journey in which Lilith must team up with Cinderella herself and yes, a surprisingly charming troll to fix everything before it’s too late. But beneath the humor and fantasy lies something deeper: a story about perception, redemption, and what it really means to deserve a happy ending. Because Steps isn’t interested in repeating the old narrative it’s rewriting it.
This is a Cinderella story where the lines between hero and villain blur, where mistakes don’t define you, and where even the most misunderstood characters finally get their moment to be seen. With a cast that blends comedic brilliance and emotional depth, and a creative team unafraid to flip the script, the film is shaping up to be more than just another animated release it’s a reimagining of a cultural staple.
