Black Noir Actor Reveals The Boys’ Most Emotional Secret Behind the Mask
For a character who barely speaks, Nathan Mitchell has somehow helped turn Black Noir into one of the most fascinating and emotionally layered characters in The Boys. And according to Mitchell, the secret to both versions of Noir has never really been about being the toughest person in the room. It’s been about heart.
Looking back on playing both the original Black Noir and the newer version introduced later in the series, Mitchell explained that what always stood out to him most about Noir 1 was the character’s childlike innocence. Beneath the terrifying suit, the silent assassin energy, and the brutal fight scenes was someone who, in many ways, still felt like a big kid inside. That emotional vulnerability is what made the original Noir resonate so strongly with fans. Sure, he could take someone out in seconds, but there was always something unexpectedly sweet and human underneath the mask. Mitchell believes that contrast is exactly what made the character unique.
With Noir 2, however, the energy shifts slightly. While the newer version still carries the intimidating presence fans expect, Mitchell says this Black Noir is driven more by earnestness and passion, especially when it comes to acting. In a universe filled with egotistical superheroes and terrifying power struggles, Noir 2 is strangely relatable because he genuinely wants to follow his dreams. Mitchell laughed while imagining what the character would say if he could fully explain himself. He just wants to act. That sincerity, oddly enough, is what makes this version of Black Noir feel so different from the stoic killer fans originally met in earlier seasons.
For Mitchell, those emotional qualities aren’t just acting choices. They come from something personal. The actor spoke passionately about the importance of staying connected to your inner child, especially as life gets busier and more routine with age. He explained that childhood joy, creativity, and imagination are things people often lose touch with over time, but those same qualities are essential for storytelling and self expression.
That mindset became a huge part of how he approached Black Noir. Whether it was the innocence of Noir 1 or the wholehearted ambition of Noir 2, Mitchell brought pieces of his own creativity and love for acting into the role. It’s part of why the character feels so alive despite speaking so little. And honestly, that emotional depth is probably why Black Noir continues to stand out in a show where most characters are competing to be the loudest or most outrageous person onscreen.
Of course, no conversation about The Boys would be complete without diving into superhero comparisons and wondering which comic book archetypes the show still hasn’t completely explored. When asked what kind of character might still be missing from the universe, Mitchell admitted it’s getting harder to answer because The Boys has already tackled so many iconic superhero types over the years.
Between Superman inspired characters, Batman style vigilantes, speedsters, lightning powered heroes, and even characters like Gen V’s Golden Boy touching on Human Torch territory, the franchise has covered a surprising amount of comic book ground. Still, Mitchell thinks there may be one major archetype left unexplored: a Hulk style character.
The idea of a massive transforming supe fueled entirely by rage feels like something that could fit perfectly into the chaotic world of The Boys, though Mitchell also pointed out that the show tends to focus more on satire, power, and personality than giant CGI destruction. Even so, he hinted there’s still plenty of room for the universe to expand, especially through potential spin offs.
And if there’s one thing Mitchell made clear, it’s that Black Noir’s appeal goes far beyond the mask, the mystery, or the violence. Whether he’s portraying a quiet innocent soul trapped inside a deadly assassin or an eager actor just trying to chase a dream, Nathan Mitchell has helped make Black Noir one of the most unexpectedly emotional characters in The Boys universe, and fans have noticed.
