During our conversation with the cast and creators of Reminders of Him, we sat down with bestselling author Colleen Hoover alongside stars Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers, Rudy Pankow, Lauren Graham, and Bradley Whitford to talk about bringing Hoover’s emotional novel to the big screen. From Hoover revealing which of her books she hopes Hollywood adapts next to the cast opening up about the story’s deeper themes of loss, forgiveness, and second chances, the conversation offered a powerful look at one of the most anticipated book-to-film adaptations following the massive attention surrounding It Ends with Us.

“I think if I got to choose the next one, it would be Heart Bones,” Hoover said. “Or another thriller like Verity. I think that one’s going to be really fun when that comes out. Honestly, I’d be happy with any of them.”
With Hoover’s growing slate of film projects, fans are already speculating about which beloved novel might be next to follow the success of It Ends with Us and Regretting You
But while future adaptations are exciting, Reminders of Him dives into something much deeper: how people navigate grief, guilt, and the possibility of forgiveness.
The Cast on Portraying Grief
For Tyriq Withers, working on the film reshaped how he personally understands grief.
The actor shared that he experienced a profound loss in his own life after losing his brother, something that influenced how he approached the emotional themes of the story.
“This movie redefined grief for me,” Withers explained. “I lost a brother and I used to be selfish with my grief, like ‘you don’t know what it’s like.’ But this film helped me understand that everyone is grieving something different. Someone else lost a best friend. A mother lost a son. You’re not just grieving a person—you’re grieving what you thought your life would be.”
That layered exploration of loss sits at the center of Hoover’s story, particularly for Kenna, a young mother returning home after prison hoping to reconnect with the daughter she’s never been allowed to know.
How the Cast Disconnects From the Emotion
Stepping into such emotionally heavy material can be draining, something Maika Monroe knows well.
For Monroe, the key to disconnecting from the intense scenes is keeping a sense of normalcy while filming.
“My best friend in the world comes with me on pretty much every movie now,” Monroe shared. “When we get off set, we go back to the apartment or hotel and just watch bad reality TV. It’s nice to have a piece of home with you.”
It’s a small ritual, but one that helps her leave the emotional weight of the story behind when the cameras stop rolling.
Colleen Hoover’s Advice for Authors
As Hoover’s novels continue to find their way onto screens, many aspiring writers are hoping to follow in her footsteps.
When asked what advice she would give to authors who dream of seeing their books adapted into films, Hoover emphasized the importance of surrounding yourself with the right creative partners.
“Surround yourself with good people,” Hoover said. “It’s hard sometimes to know if you’re doing that, but trust your gut.”
She also highlighted her long-time collaboration with producer Lauren Levine, who has worked with Hoover since her first adaptation, Confess, back in 2014.
“You meet people along the way,” Hoover explained, “and you hold on to the ones you know are good.”
A Story About Forgiveness
The emotional heart of the film resonated deeply with the cast.
According to Lauren Graham, the story ultimately centers on forgiveness and the possibility of hope even during the darkest moments.
“The whole movie is about forgiveness and the strength of love,” Graham said. “We start in this incredibly painful place of loss, but by the end it’s about allowing hope and forgiveness in—even if you’re still grieving.”
Meanwhile, Bradley Whitford praised Hoover’s storytelling and the emotional complexity of the narrative.
“I’m fascinated by writers,” Whitford said. “My entire career is basically surfing on great writing. Reading the book, I was blown away by her ability to create the most excruciating situation and then tell a story about the necessity of love under very difficult circumstances.”
Rudy Pankow on the Film’s Heart
Music also plays a memorable role in the story, something Rudy Pankow joked about when asked what song his character might choose by the end of the film.
His answer?
“We Are Family.”
It’s a fitting choice for a story that ultimately centers on rebuilding relationships and finding connection again after loss.
By the end of our conversation, one thing was clear: Reminders of Him isn’t just a story about heartbreak. It’s about the difficult journey toward forgiveness—and the hope that even after unimaginable loss, healing is still possible. Catch it in theaters March 13!
