Dean DeBlois Promises a Faithful Live-Action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ That Expands, Not Replaces, the Original
Dean DeBlois is stepping into the live-action arena, but not without setting the record straight first. The beloved filmmaker behind Lilo & Stitch and the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy shared exclusive footage from his live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon (2025). But before anyone gets too carried away, he wants fans to know one thing: this isn’t about replacing the animated classic—it’s about expanding the world he already loves.

A Leap Into Live-Action
Despite his legendary status in animation, DeBlois has never been the biggest fan of live-action adaptations. In a recent presentation, he shared that if it was going to happen, he wanted to make sure it was done right. That meant being deeply involved in the process to ensure that the heart, soul, and magic of it came to life in a way that felt true to the original.
For DeBlois, this is personal. And while some animated-to-live-action adaptations have left fans underwhelmed, DeBlois is determined to prove that this can be different, and from what we have seen it already is, I mean we cried and the movie isn’t even out yet.
A Deeper Dive Into Astrid and Hiccup’s Relationship
One of the biggest changes DeBlois teased is a better exploration of the dynamic between Astrid and Hiccup in the live-action film. While their relationship in the animated trilogy had its ups and downs, the live-action version will explore Astrid’s character in greater depth, adding more layers to her dynamic with Hiccup. Expect more conflict, more tension, and a deeper look into what makes their bond so strong.
This approach makes sense—live-action allows for more nuanced performances, and giving Astrid a sharper edge could make her an even more compelling character. Fans of the original trilogy shouldn’t worry, though. DeBlois has reassured everyone that this isn’t a reimagining, but rather an opportunity to flesh out the story in ways animation couldn’t.
Keeping the Spirit of the Original
If there’s one thing DeBlois is clear about, it’s that the animated How to Train Your Dragon will always hold a special place in his heart. He’s incredibly proud of what he and his team accomplished, and this new film isn’t meant to replace it. Instead, it’s a chance to add new layers to the world of Berk and its characters, giving fans a fresh way to experience a story they already love.
With DeBlois at the helm, there’s reason to be hopeful as How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is being guided by the very person who made the original soar. And if there’s anyone who can make dragons fly again—this time in live-action—it’s Dean DeBlois.
