Coralie Fargeat Turned Down Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ to Focus On ‘The Substance’
Coralie Fargeat took a huge risk, and it’s paid off in ways she probably never imagined. When she was offered the chance to direct a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, she made the bold decision to walk away and pour all her energy into her passion project, The Substance. It’s now one of the biggest surprise stories of the awards season. The Substance, starring Demi Moore, not only defied expectations but also grossed a solid $76 million worldwide, earning rave reviews along the way. It even snagged a Best Picture nomination at the 97th Academy Awards, with Fargeat getting nods for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Sure, we would have loved to see her take on Black Widow, but it looks like Fargeat’s decision to stick with her own vision was worth the wait.

According to Variety, Fargeat’s decision might have turned out very differently had she taken up Marvel Studios’ offer to direct Black Widow. According to Variety, Fargeat was in the running for the high-profile project, which was a priority for Marvel at the time. However, despite being in a financially tough spot, she chose to stay true to her creative integrity and focus on The Substance. Fargeat’s commitment to maintaining full creative control was a key factor in her decision, especially given her disagreements with the original financier of The Substance. She wasn’t willing to compromise on her vision, even when the studio pushed for changes. Marvel, known for its strong control over its films, didn’t align with her creative freedom, leading her to walk away from Black Widow and invest herself entirely in her own project.
At first glance, Fargeat might not seem like an obvious fit for a blockbuster like Black Widow. However, Marvel Studios was actively seeking out fresh and critically acclaimed voices to direct its films, especially for projects that were seen as pivotal. With Black Widow being a prequel with Scarlett Johansson both starring and producing, Marvel targeted filmmakers who had made waves in the indie scene. Names like Amma Asante, Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Maggie Betts, and Lynn Shelton were all considered, while Chloé Zhao was in talks before deciding to pitch Eternals instead. Ultimately, Cate Shortland was chosen to direct the film.
Looking back, Fargeat’s choice seems especially wise. The Substance earned her recognition and respect in a way that would have been difficult to achieve in the MCU. At the time, Fargeat was fresh off her debut feature, Revenge (2017), and Marvel’s trend of hiring indie directors for blockbuster films was beginning to gain momentum. Directors like Jon Watts, who went from directing the low-budget Cop Car to Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Chloé Zhao, who moved from the $80,000 budget of The Rider to the $200 million Eternals, are proof that Marvel Studios has successfully embraced new and unconventional talent. But this also speaks to the studio’s tendency to hire filmmakers with less power to push back against creative direction, preferring those who are more likely to go along with their vision.
In the end, Fargeat’s gamble on creative freedom has paid off, proving that trusting in one’s own voice—rather than chasing a huge franchise—can lead to both artistic and professional success, I mean those visuals in The Substance will forever be engraved in my mind.
