Will Smith Is Reportedly Working On ‘Hitch’ Sequel 20 Years After Rom-com Debut
Renowned actor, rapper, comedian, and film producer Will Smith is developing a sequel to his 2005 box office success, Hitch. The romantic comedy which has a 68% Rotten Tomatoes rating was Smith’s first movie in the genre, despite already being referred to as a movie star by the turn of the century.
Smith was first introduced to Hollywood in the 80s and proceeded to win his first Grammy in 1989 for ‘Best Rap Performance’ for “Parents Just Don’t Understand”. Subsequently, Smith’s popularity grew with NBC 90s sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where he starred as himself alongside James Avery and Alfonso Ribeiro.

Other notable opportunities followed the good-natured series including the Bad Boys and Men in Black franchises, Independence Day, and countless more.
Hitch debuted during Valentine’s Day weekend in 2005 earning over $371 million worldwide in the first 3 days. Such a feat made the movie the most popular rom-com ever at the time, and came as a shocker to those who were on set to experience its formation.
Director Anthony Tennant explained several situations where he and Smith did not meet eye-to-eye while filming.
“I didn’t want cheap jokes, but he didn’t trust me,” according to Collider. “The movie I wanted to make and the movie Will wanted to make, neither one of those movies is as good as the movie we made together. It was a battle.”
Tennant went on to say that he discovered the sequel was being developed about three months ago.

“I had a really good idea for a sequel, and I was talking to an executive at Sony, and he said Will’s production company is developing a sequel. Hey, that’s Hollywood.”
Tennant is also known for his hit rom-com from 2002, Sweet Home Alabama and 1995’s It Takes Two.
Nevertheless, with Smith at the helm of the sequel, fans of ‘’Hitch” can look forward to a fresh take on the beloved rom-com, proving that some love stories—on-screen and off—are worth revisiting.
