About the Film
It’s not easy being green—especially when you’re the cranky, cantankerous Grinch. Living high above Whoville with only his loyal dog Max, the reclusive Grinch spends his days brooding over his hatred for the cheerful Whos and their Christmas celebrations. When their annual festivities draw near, he concocts a mischievous plan to steal Christmas itself.
But when he encounters the kind-hearted Cindy Lou Who (played by Taylor Momsen in her film debut), the Grinch’s cold heart begins to thaw, reminding audiences of the timeless power of kindness, generosity, and the true spirit of the season.
A Timeless Holiday Legacy
Dr. Seuss introduced the Grinch in 1957, inspired by his disillusionment with Christmas commercialism. The story was first adapted into the beloved 1966 animated television special directed by Chuck Jones, which famously gave the Grinch his now-iconic green hue.
Jim Carrey’s unforgettable 2000 live-action portrayal brought new depth and comedy to the classic character. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas marked the first full-length feature film adaptation of Seuss’s work. It was directed by Ron Howard and produced alongside Brian Grazer through Imagine Entertainment.
The film featured an acclaimed ensemble cast, including Christine Baranski, Bill Irwin, Molly Shannon, Jeffrey Tambor, and the late Josh Ryan Evans in his final role.
A Record-Breaking Holiday Hit

Upon its release on November 18, 2000, The Grinch became an instant hit. Opening in more than 3,200 theaters, it dominated the U.S. box office for four consecutive weeks, grossing over $260 million domestically and $345 million worldwide. The film was 2000’s top earner and remains the second-highest-grossing holiday movie after Home Alone.
The film’s artistry also earned critical acclaim. Legendary makeup designer Rick Baker won the Academy Award® for Best Makeup, while the film received two additional Oscar® nominations for Best Costume Design (Rita Ryack) and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Michael Corenblith and Merideth Boswell).
