Steven Paul Relaunches Atlas Comics on 50th Anniversary at New York Comic Con
During New York Comic Con (NYCC), legendary filmmaker Steven Paul revealed the much-anticipated relaunch of Atlas Comics, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic comic book publisher. Originally founded by Martin Goodman—who also founded Marvel Comics—Atlas was revived under the new name Atlas/Seaboard by Paul’s SP Media Group.
The relaunch included a major partnership with Walmart to distribute classic Atlas Comics merchandise. Fans were treated to exclusive collectibles, including action figures from Mego Toys and a new apparel line created with Mad Engine. Paramount Pictures also announced the development of a live-action film based on Atlas/Seaboard’s character Devilina.

At NYCC, a 1,200-square-foot booth showcased the relaunch, featuring limited-edition giveaways, reprinted comics, and previews of the new collectible merchandise set to be available in Walmart stores and online. Attendees also had the chance to meet industry legends, including Atlas publisher Jason Goodman, editor-in-chief Jeff Rovin, Mego Toys president Marty Abrams, and acclaimed comic writer and artist Larry Hama, as well as iconic actor Jon Voight.
“We were excited to connect comic fans with exclusive merchandise inspired by the rich history of Atlas/Seaboard,” said Frank Barbieri, Walmart’s VP of content and digital. “This partnership allowed us to deliver something truly special to the comic book community.”
Steven Paul, along with Scott Karol, President of SP Media Group/Atlas Comics, led the relaunch. Paul expressed enthusiasm for bringing Atlas/Seaboard’s vast catalog of characters back to life: “Atlas/Seaboard has a deep history and treasure trove of characters. The opportunity to carry forward Martin Goodman’s legacy and to do so at NYCC was a great honor.”

The relaunch also marked the announcement of Devilina as a live-action film, centered on the sister of Satan as she battles her own dark powers. Along with Devilina, classic titles like Phoenix, Grim Ghost, and Hands of the Dragon were reimagined for modern audiences.
Jason Goodman, grandson of Atlas founder Martin Goodman, shared his excitement: “We aimed to honor the legacy of my grandfather and the creators who built Atlas/Seaboard into a pioneering comic publisher.”
Jeff Rovin, editor-in-chief and longtime comic veteran, added: “Bringing Atlas/Seaboard back to life was a thrilling moment. The creative potential we have with these characters is boundless, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
While speaking with Steven Paul, we touched on his exciting plans to bring Atlas Comics back to the forefront of both the comic and movie worlds. With his iconic history at Marvel and producing major films like Ghost Rider, Paul is the perfect person to steer Atlas back to its former glory. After all, he’s joined by some of the original creators who shaped the comic book industry. This revival isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about pushing Atlas into a new era, one where its legacy can thrive on the big screen and beyond.
Missed out this year, NYCC will be back October, 2025.
