Peacemaker Season 2: Gunn’s Writing Is Still Unhinged Perfection
Episode 1 of Peacemaker Season 2 dropped on August 21, 2025, kicking off a new chapter with our favorite morally conflicted hero. The new season promises weekly doses of chaos and character growth, airing Thursdays at 9:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM PT — and if the premiere is any indication, we’re in for one wild ride.

First episodes are crucial — they either hook you or lose you. Thankfully, this premiere grabs you fast and doesn’t let go. We’re craving more of John Cena’s Peacemaker, and it’s clear James Gunn carefully reintroduces him within the new DC Universe (DCU).
Right off the bat, don’t skip the “Previously in the DCU” segment. It’s not just filler — it sets the stage with some surprising shifts that will catch your attention immediately.
While Superman carries a lot of the weight of rebooting the DCU, our eyes were on Peacemaker. After his brief appearance in Superman, many fans were left wondering: was that the DCEU’s Peacemaker from Season 1, or someone entirely new? Episode 1 addresses this head-on. James Gunn’s handling of the multiverse ranks among the most seamless and compelling we’ve seen.
What sets this multiverse story apart is its restraint. Instead of overwhelming us with Easter eggs and cameos, the show immerses us in a fresh world. A world that looks familiar, but behaves just differently enough to keep us guessing. The most surprising twist? Chris Smith’s father is alive… and nice. After what we saw in Season 1, that’s a multiversal curveball no one saw coming.

The episode opens as Eagly eagerly nudges Chris awake. He shuffles out of bed and into what used to be his Peacemaker HQ — only to discover it’s now a gateway to something much bigger: a quantum dimension zone. Eagly leads him to a familiar door framed by classic Peacemaker gear. Driven by curiosity, Chris steps through – into an alternate universe where everything, even his father, has changed.
Back in his original universe, Chris is grappling with the aftermath of Project Butterfly. He longs to be part of something bigger — maybe even the Justice Gang (wink wink) — but feels lost and disconnected. Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) grounds him with a reminder that he “saved the fucken world,” and he is a hero, whether he sees it or not.
We also follow Harcourt’s post-Butterfly path, which is even rockier. Still carrying the weight of Amanda Waller’s past orders, she struggles to find her place in a world that’s shut her out despite her impressive credentials. A standout bar fight sequence proves Harcourt’s still a force to be reckoned with — though the liquor might throw off her aim just a bit. You’ll want to see how that showdown ends.

Eventually, Chris re-enters the new universe, encountering faces from his past — loved ones no longer alive in his own world. For a moment, we see him at peace, even smiling. But the calm breaks instantly when he confronts… himself. The confrontation escalates quickly, ending in a fight that could reshape everything.
This season premiere lays the groundwork for something truly special — emotional stakes, multiverse madness, and the kind of character-driven storytelling that makes Peacemaker more than just another superhero show.
We’ll release a full spoiler and Easter egg breakdown next Thursday, August 28, ahead of Episode 2 on HBO Max. Until then, go watch Episode 1 — trust us, you don’t want to miss it.
