During a recent press conference, Murphy shared insights into his creative process for the show and how he drew from personal experiences and current global anxieties to craft this suspenseful and eerie tale. “It’s a very personal piece, a meditation on what I think is going on in the world and what we’re all going through,” Murphy explained.

The show, which Murphy describes as a horror-thriller drama, also explores profound themes of good versus evil. As he puts it, “Horror is good versus evil, which is a very profound sentiment that I think we’re dealing with in the world a lot right now.” With a procedural element and a family at its core, Grotesquerie brings a fresh take to the genre while keeping the audience guessing each week with its twists and mysteries.
Murphy’s casting decisions for Grotesquerie were also highly deliberate, as he tailored roles specifically for the actors, including Travis Kelce, who surprised many with his dedication to the craft. Murphy shared a heartwarming story of how Kelce, eager to try his hand at acting, jumped at the chance to join the project. “A star is a star is a star,” Murphy said, praising Kelce’s natural charisma and professionalism on set.
A Creative Playground for the Cast
The cast of Grotesquerie is a dynamic mix of seasoned actors and rising stars, each bringing their unique talents to the chilling new series. Lesley Manville takes on the role of “Nurse Redd,” lending her acclaimed dramatic prowess to the character. Nicholas Alexander Chavez, fresh from his role in the Menendez project, plays “Father Charlie Mayhew,” showcasing his versatility and depth. Micaela Diamond portrays the enigmatic “Sister Megan Duval,” while Raven Goodwin captivates as “Merritt Tryon.” Courtney B. Vance, who also serves as executive producer, plays the commanding “Marshall Tryon,” delivering a performance full of gravitas.
Niecy Nash-Betts, who executive produces, shines as “Detective Lois Tryon,” blending strength and vulnerability in her portrayal. Reflecting on her role, Nash-Betts shared, “Well, you know, it is said that people who can make you laugh can make you cry, but the reverse is not always true. So I’m grateful that I have a duality in my art. I didn’t know, because I wasn’t welcomed into the drama side for a long time. I didn’t know how cathartic it was, I did not know how healing it could be sometimes to be able to revisit emotions and be able to share them onscreen. I’m so, so grateful for Ryan because this opportunity, especially in this genre, is not typically led by Black women. I’m very grateful that I can unpack some of my own mayhem and foolishness through this series, so thank you, Ryan.”
Nicholas Alexander Chavez echoed Nash-Betts’ sentiment about working with Murphy, saying, “Well, Ryan is a world builder, um, and it was interesting because I got to work with him on two very, very different worlds. Uh, the Menendez project kind of had a context already set for it, right, where we’re, uh, telling the story that’s based on true events that happened in 1989 and the early ’90s. Whereas this project was an entirely new world where the only limitations were, um, our creativity, our imagination, and, um, it was interesting to just be thrown into, uh, the depths of what Ryan is capable of coming up with. And, uh, it was, uh, an honor and a privilege to experience both.”
With Grotesquerie, Murphy proves once again that he can create complex, compelling stories that resonate with audiences while pushing the boundaries of television. As the series unfolds, viewers can expect a rollercoaster of emotions and a deep dive into the human psyche, all wrapped in Murphy’s signature style of gripping storytelling.
