Jeff Kinney on Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw: Humor, Heart, and a Generational Legacy
Jeff Kinney, the beloved author behind the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, has once again struck that perfect balance of humor and heart with The Last Straw. The latest installment of the series continues to resonate with readers of all ages, creating a lasting legacy that spans generations.
“I started writing these books when I was in my 20s,” Kinney shared during our conversation. “In fact, a lot of the stories that made it into The Last Straw were written when I was 28 years old. Now I’m 54, I’ve raised two boys who are 23 and 20, and I’ve lived a lot of life in between. It’s really cool that these books are reaching multiple generations of kids. Hopefully, in 10 years, my kids will be reading these books as well.”
When asked about what makes this installment different from the ones before, Kinney explained that he wanted to focus on a father-son story—a theme that resonates beyond just the immediate family dynamic. “I was a little nervous about it because I knew a friendship story in movie one would appeal to kids, and a sibling story would appeal to kids too. But I feel really good about the story we’ve told. The stakes are high, and kids will see themselves in Greg, in his parents, and parents will see their own family dynamics in these characters. The moral is that sometimes it’s just about the journey and spending time with someone because life is unpredictable.”

Balancing humor with emotional depth is no small feat, but Kinney shared how much care went into crafting the story. “It was hard, and it took me about two years to get it right on the page. I wanted to find that exact balance between humor and heart. Hopefully, we’ve told a story that feels authentic and makes people reflect on their own family situations.”
As for what’s next in the Wimpy Kid universe, Kinney remains open to possibilities. “I feel like I’m in a good place now. I enjoy making these Disney+ movies and hope to continue doing them for a long time. Maybe we’ll expand the ‘Wimpyverse’ in ways I’m not expecting, but for now, this feels like a great place to be.”
Finally, reflecting on the journey that brought him here, Kinney offered advice to his younger self: “Get good at storytelling. I was a good joke writer to begin with, but it took me a long time to become a good storyteller. I’ve learned so much over time.”
Wrapping up our conversation, Kinney expressed his gratitude for fans and the continued joy of creating stories that connect with readers young and old alike. “It makes a lot of people happy,” he said warmly.
