James L. Brooks Returns with ‘Ella McCay’ A Holiday Comedy Set to Shine
James L. Brooks is back behind the camera and he’s bringing heart, humor, and a powerhouse ensemble with him. 20th Century Studios has officially released the first trailer and poster for Ella McCay, the upcoming comedy drama that marks Brooks’ long awaited return to the director’s chair. The film is set to open exclusively in theaters on December 12, 2025, just in time to add some warmth (and wisecracks) to your holiday movie calendar.
Written and directed by Brooks, the Oscar® and Emmy Award winning mind behind Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, As Good as It Gets, and The Simpsons, Ella McCay tells the story of a passionate young woman trying to navigate the chaos of work, family, and everything in between. Described as a comedy about the people you love and how to survive them the film strikes a familiar Brooks tone, blending wit with emotional depth.

Leading the film is Emma Mackey, who takes on the title role with charm and strength. She’s joined by a stacked cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fearn, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks, and the legendary Albert Brooks and Woody Harrelson.
Produced by James L. Brooks alongside Richard Sakai, Julie Ansell, and Jennifer Brooks, Ella McCay carries the signature DNA of a Brooks project richly drawn characters, sharp dialogue, and a balance of messy humanity and genuine warmth.
With its first look now out in the world, Ella McCay is shaping up to be a must watch this winter. Between its impressive cast and the return of a beloved storyteller, this film promises to deliver laughs, heart, and perhaps a few holiday tears.
