We spoke with the creatives behind the four-part miniseries, including Jaclyn Simon (Series Producer), Valeria LaPoint (Director), and Austin Madison, to explore how the series brings Riley’s dreams to life and examine the impact of dreams on our waking lives. Additionally, we interviewed Paula Pell and Ally Maki, who play Paula and Janelle, the directors of this captivating mockumentary. We also discussed how these new characters will interact with Riley’s Inside Out emotions, both in the present and as she grows up, shaping her journey unexpectedly.
The series centers around Paula Persimmon (voiced by Paula Pell), the acclaimed director overseeing this fantastical dreamscape. Paula’s hallmark is creating whimsical dreams featuring Rainbow Unicorns and generous sprinkles of glitter. But as Riley grows older, her dreams begin to lose their luster. Paula struggles to adapt to the changing landscape of Riley’s subconscious, where dreams just aren’t as magical as they once were.
Desperate to reignite the spark in her career, Paula teams up with Xeni (voiced by Richard Ayoade), an overly confident, yet inexperienced, daydream director who sees the opportunity to make a big break in the dream business. But their partnership quickly hits turbulence as they clash over their differing visions of what makes a successful dream for a young tween like Riley. Will the mismatched duo be able to create the next big tween-dream hit and salvage Paula’s career, or will they both fall victim to the nightmare of creative differences?
