Will There Still Be a Law Abiding Citizen Sequel? Gerard Butler Speaks
Gerard Butler’s fiery role in Law Abiding Citizen has long been a fan favorite, and even though it’s been years since the original film hit theaters, audiences have never stopped asking for a sequel. Understandably, many have wondered how a follow-up could work, especially considering that Butler’s character, Clyde Shelton, dies at the end of the first movie.
But back in 2022, talk of a sequel wasn’t so far-fetched. It was softly confirmed to be in development, though since then, updates have gone quiet. So during the How to Train Your Dragon live-action press junket, we couldn’t resist asking Gerard Butler whether we’ll actually get to see Clyde return to the screen.
“Yeah, every now and again we go, ‘Oh, it’s a TV show that’s happening… no, it’s a prequel… no, it’s a sequel,’” Butler laughed. “I don’t know. I don’t know what’s happening. It’s a shame because I’m very proud of that movie. It’s so good.”
He continued:
“When people quote movies of mine that are their favorites, they obviously say 300 and Law Abiding Citizen. And it would be kind of cool to revisit that in some way… I mean, I don’t think I’d be looking that good right now, oh my god.”
While Clyde’s death might seem final, it’s Hollywood — and nothing’s ever truly off the table. A sequel could explore:
- A prequel focusing on Clyde’s black ops past.
- A twist reveal that he faked his death (he was always ten steps ahead, after all).
- A spiritual successor where a new character picks up his mission, with Clyde guiding from the shadows or through flashbacks.
With clear fan demand and Butler’s own enthusiasm, the door remains wide open for Law Abiding Citizen to return — in one form or another. Watch the interview now!
