Gareth Edwards Addresses Dune 4 Directing Rumors, Plans for Jurassic Films, Reveals ‘Rebirth’ Once Had a Different Name
When it comes to building cinematic worlds on a massive scale, few modern directors spark more curiosity than Gareth Edwards. With genre-defining hits like Rogue One and Godzilla on his résumé, rumors constantly swirl about which iconic franchise he’ll tackle next.
He’s already left his mark on one beloved series with Jurassic World Rebirth, which Edwards directed as a fresh spin on the dinosaur saga. In a recent conversation, he opened up about what it was like stepping into that prehistoric playground — and where the story might go from here.

“When I first got it, it didn’t have the title it’s got now,” Edwards revealed. “It had a totally different title and it really felt like, oh, this is a new chapter. I didn’t know if they were planning a trilogy or anything, but it’s a standalone movie. My favorite movies that turn into great trilogies usually don’t plan for it — the first film is completely self-contained. I really like that. I like a movie that’s got a beginning, middle, and end, and when the credits roll, that’s the end of the story.”

But does that mean the Jurassic saga is extinct? Not exactly. “It’s just a high-class problem if, at some point down the road, someone has to go, ‘Oh my God, what will we do for the sequel?’” he joked. “I’ve got some thoughts as a fan that I’d want to see, but not as a filmmaker. We’ll just see what happens.”
Pressed for details, Edwards couldn’t resist adding with a grin, “Yeah, like giant robot with a— No.”
As for the persistent chatter that he could take over Dune 4 if Denis Villeneuve ever steps aside, Edwards was quick to praise the franchise’s current steward. “Denis has done an amazing job,” he said. “If they ever wanted someone else, I’d have to think very hard about stepping into those shoes. But right now, there’s nothing real there.”
Whether he ends up wrangling sandworms or more rampaging dinosaurs, Gareth Edwards remains one of Hollywood’s most in-demand sci-fi visionaries — and, for now, he’s content to let the speculation roam free.
