Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Trailer Reveals a Mythic IMAX Epic
Christopher Nolan is officially back, and the first trailer for The Odyssey confirms that he’s entering mythic territory on a scale we haven’t seen before.
Nolan’s upcoming film reimagines Homer’s legendary tale as a full-blown mythic action epic, filmed across multiple locations worldwide using brand-new IMAX® film technology. From the opening moments of the trailer, the ambition is unmistakable — massive natural landscapes, roaring seas, and an emphasis on physical realism that feels unmistakably Nolan.

Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, appearing weathered and battle-worn as he begins his long journey home after the Trojan War. In the trailer, his narration reflects on years of conflict and the impossible distance between survival and home, setting a somber, determined tone for the story. It’s less about glory and more about endurance.

The footage also offers quick but meaningful looks at the supporting cast. Anne Hathaway appears as Penelope, Odysseus’s steadfast wife, while Tom Holland is introduced as Telemachus, his son, waiting for his father’s return. As the trailer unfolds, Odysseus is shown facing violent storms and unseen dangers, reinforcing the idea that the journey itself is the true battle.
Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway are Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron also starring. The trailer keeps their roles mysterious, revealing just enough to spark speculation without giving away key story details.
For the first time ever, The Odyssey will be presented on IMAX® film screens, a landmark moment for both Nolan and the ancient story itself. Written and directed by Nolan, the film is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolanthrough Syncopy, with Thomas Hayslip serving as executive producer.
Set for release on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey is shaping up to be more than an adaptation — it looks like a cinematic event built for the biggest screen possible. If the trailer is any indication, Nolan isn’t just retelling a classic myth. He’s turning it into a modern epic.
