Benedict Cumberbatch Now Says He Will Be in Avengers: Doomsday: “Don’t Ever Believe Anything I Say”
So, do we believe Benedict Cumberbatch or not? Honestly, I’m kind of confused too. One minute, he’s telling Variety he won’t be in the next Avengers movie, and the next, he’s saying he was wrong. Classic Cumberbatch, right?
It’s possible he’s joking, though—Marvel stars are notorious for keeping things under wraps and playing coy with the press to avoid spoilers. I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time someone’s been misleading about their role in the MCU. Remember Andrew Garfield, who completely lied about his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home? Yeah, that one was a satisfying surprise.
Anyway, per Business Insider at the premiere of his new film The Thing with Feathers at the Sundance Film Festival, Cumberbatch got asked about his Variety interview where he seemed to hint Doctor Strange wouldn’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday, dropping a potential spoiler ahead of the movie. When Business Insider asked him about it, he quickly corrected himself, saying, “I got that wrong, I am in the next one.” So much for those stern emails from Marvel.
But then, just to keep things interesting, when I pointed out that other Marvel stars have definitely misled us before, he tossed out a cheeky response: “Don’t ever believe anything I say,” followed by a grin. Classic Benedict.
As for what’s next for Doctor Strange, we all knew he wasn’t done with the MCU, but it sounds like we might be seeing more of him sooner than expected. In that same Variety interview, Cumberbatch mentioned Doctor Strange would be involved in Avengers: Secret Wars—you know, the sequel coming after Doomsday in 2027. So, it seems like he’s not just back for one more movie, but at least two.

In the meantime, though, Cumberbatch has a completely different project on his plate. He stars in The Thing With Feathers, a darkly comedic horror film about a grieving father trying to navigate life after the sudden death of his wife. His character—simply called “Dad”—spirals into despair while raising two young sons, all while dealing with an anthropomorphic giant crow that seems to embody the family’s grief. Definitely not the Doctor Strange we’re used to!
The film’s director, Dylan Southern, described it as a passion project for both him and Cumberbatch, who also serves as a producer. Southern praised Cumberbatch for his intense, no-holds-barred approach to the role, diving deep into some pretty dark emotional spaces. According to Southern, watching Cumberbatch tackle the part was mesmerizing—he really went there.
So, while we wait to see whether or not Cumberbatch will appear in the Avengers movie he just “got wrong,” we can at least look forward to this gripping, very different role in The Thing With Feathers. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if Doctor Strange really makes an appearance in Doomsday after all, he did say not to believe anything he says!
